If you are a liberal turned progressive and oppose increased levels of immigration check your credentials. Progressive politicians in the last twenty years have always voiced support for increased immigration but they have failed to turn that vocal support into legislation. In the last two years under the politically dominant Obama-Pelosi-Reed administration they failed to ever hold a vote in the Senate on Comprehensive Immigration Reform. The Senate vote on the Dream Act was held after the Republican sweep of November 2010 and would have gained sixty votes if the democrats had held their quorum together.
This is a pretty sorry record and led former Sacremento CA police chief Arturo Venegas to say "Our friends have betrayed us."
What can progressives do?
- Suggest to your representatives that they support the One Percent Solution
- Read proposed Comprehensive Immigration Reform bills and make sure that they include robust levels of future immigration
- Don't discount the arguments on the right that oppose multi-culti accomodations.
- Seek a compromise: amnesty and future immigration in exchange for acculturalization and responsibility.
